Eagle Ray Pass, Diving the Drop Off - Grand Cayman
In 2014, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend some time working at Cathy Church's Photo Centre in Grand Cayman. Cathy kindly let some of us take her own boat out on our day off to go where ever we wanted. We headed north to one of Grand Cayman's premier sites, Eagle Ray Pass. Located on the north wall it has a dramatically steep and breathtaking drop off to the main wall with a stunning natural archway. It was incredible to look down into the deep blue depths suspended over thousands of feet of water. We enjoyed amazing visibility that day and the whole dive site to ourselves apart from a couple of Eagle Rays swimming past.

Diving Sunset House Grand Cayman | The Shore Dive Collection | TropicLens - 4K
Our first dive site for The Shore Dive Collection on Grand Cayman was an easy choice. We have had so many good memories of Sunset House over the years. Our first visit was in 2007 and we’ve been back six times since then. Leslie introduced me to flamingo tongues and we saw so many on this trip as well. There were also quite a few conchs.
Sunset House saw six first time captures for us including indigo hamlets, mermaid’s wine glasses, red snapping shrimp, brassy chub, common comet sea stars and a bridled burrfish. There were a few other less common sea creatures as well, like a cero, Nassau groupers, ocean triggerfish, masked hamlets and a banded jawfish.

The site is easy to dive and supported by a full service dive resort including equipment rental, rinse tanks, showers, bathrooms, restaurant and beach bar. Check out all there is to offer in the video.
FIRST TIME CAPTURE IDENTIFICATION
We primarily use two sources to validate our first time captures. The first is Florent's Guide To The Tropical Reefs which can be found at https://reefguide.org. Its free and has lots of pictures, but is not comprehensive. The second is “The Reef Set: Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral (3 Volumes)”. The box set can be found on Amazon; however with all our travels, we also purchased the eBooks (http://fishid.com/store/product-category/ebooks/) so we don’t have to carry an extra five pounds of paper in our luggage. :-) We may also reference other sources from time to time as well.

We drove up to Rum Point from Grand Cayman's West Bay to get the drop on my friends Steve and Robin who had NO CLUE I was on island! The surprise totally worked. Hilarity and great diving ensued...
We dive Grand Cayman's AWESOME North Wall - which drops 4000ft/1200m of vertical underwater topography (we didn't go that deep, obviously, because I'm typing this...) As always, my trusty dive buddy @FindingMenno was along for the ride.
AND... we give you 5 pieces of advice for points to consider if you've never done a big wall dive before. Swimming out seeing shallow reef below you, over the precipice and the coral suddenly drops away to deep, dark water can make some people's stomachs flip.
Whilst the underwater wall makes dive navigation relatively straight forward, there are definitely additional considerations to diving deep walls Vs shallow reef.
